Geraint Thomas Career Performance On Monte Bondone | Giro d’Italia Stage 16 2023
The Giro d'Italia finally delivered some action in the GC group on Stage 16 with a powerful initial attack from Joao Almeida and counter from Geraint Thomas putting huge pressure on Primož Roglič. Almeida took the stage on the same time as Thomas who did perhaps his best climbing performance whilst the Slovenian was rescued by Sepp Kuss to lose 'only' 25 seconds.
The Climbs of Paris Nice and Tirreno Adriatico.
In this article I will analyse possible strategies, performances and likely outcomes on the climbs of Paris Nice and Tirreno Adriatico, while taking into account the circumstances of the non climbing stages. A similar piece for the Volta a Catalunya will follow in the coming weeks. All watt estimations are calculated using standard values for wind, draft, temperature and etalon weight of 60kg.
Top 10 Climbers for the 2023 Season
The 2022 cycling season was full of top level climbing performances with many records broken and new climbers bursting onto the scene. The list of Top 10 climbing performances of 2022 was dominated by Evenepoel and Vingegaard but will the same riders dominate the long ascents in WorldTour races in 2023?
Watts per Kilogram Explained
The ratio of a rider's watts produced per kilogram of bodyweight (w/kg) is the key metric which determines how fast they can ride uphill. We analyse and compare climbing performances primarily based on estimated w/kg, while also taking into account other factors such as altitude or spent kj/kg/h before the climb.
Naturally, many questions regarding our calculation of watts, the accuracy, power meters, etalon standard watts have arisen, which we will try to clarify here.
All-Time Watts in Volta a Valenciana or Power Meter Issues?
Volta a Valenciana ended with a huge upset from veteran Rui Costa who not only won the final stage but also the overall thanks to his exploits in a cat and mouse final few kilometres. In this article, we will analyse in particular = the decisive climb, La Frontera (5.1 km, 9.22%), where the best climbers rode away from the peloton after an hour of racing, doing great watts for early February and maybe even setting their all-time bests.
Who Can Actually Lead-Out Mark Cavendish at Astana?
After the B&B Hotels team completely collapsed late in this off-season, Mark Cavendish was left with few options in his search for a new team. Unexpectedly, the Manx Missile has joined Astana Qazaqstan, a team which, up until a few weeks ago did not have have space left on its roster. However after sacking Miguel Angel Lopez a roster spot opened up as well as his presumedly handsome salary off their books for 2023 too. Good news for Cavendish' wallet as well as fans hoping to see him at the Tour de France, but how will he actually fare at Astana, a team which has historically not focussed on sprinting.
Young Riders To Watch In 2023
The peloton is getting younger and younger and there will be many talents who will shine in 2023. In this article we picked some of the best young talent that might impress with great performances this year.
Of the 10 riders in this list, all of them were born between 2000 and 2003. To be included they must have been outside of the UCI ranking Top 200 with no big results in WorldTour races before 2023 as well as some obvious supertalents like Cian Uijtdebroeks being excluded despite meeting those restrictions.

The 2023 race calendar breaks with tradition by moving the World Championships to early August, between the Tour de France and the Vuelta a España. This will also be the year in which an extensive calendar of races outside Europe returns, and several races will be born that will make the season more interesting. The Top 10 riders who Benefit from the New UCI Points System
Right before Christmas the UCI announced a new points system which will be in effect from 2023. It will change how many teams target races, especially Grand Tours, where points for individual stages have been increased by multiple factors. Whilst we explained last week how the new points are distributed, in this article we will analyse which riders might gain the most from this adjusted system.
The New WorldTour Points System Explained
Following complaints from numerous teams about the WorldTour's promotion and relegation system, the UCI has published new regulations with significant changes. The rule amendment has been published less than a month before the start of the new 2023-2025 triennium, whose cumulative ranking will determine which 18 teams will be part of the WorldTour in 2026-2028.
